How to Customize Your Search to Find Local and National Jobs

How to Customize Your Search to Find Local and National JobsHow to Customize Your Search to Find Local and National JobsIt takes energy to put together an effective job search. Between updating your resume and organizing your references, you must prepare before you even apply. While there are many things that could make looking for a job a difficult task, one of the most difficult is not knowing where you want to work. You might be searching locally, which means pounding the pavement and tapping into your personal network. Or you might be searching (and competing) nationally. If youre on the hund and open to local or national positions, heres how to perform a smart search that takes advantage of the different tools, strategies and tactics available to you.Tweaking Your Resume, Cover Letter and Networking HabitsThe first division between a local and national job search comes down to your behavior, including your resume, cover letter and networking habits. For localA local job hunt used t o require a completely different approach to these job search assets. However, most professional positions now expect you to complete the application process entirely online. That means designing and formatting a digital resume and cover letter, as well as establishing a professional email address that includes your first and last name. When signing up for a free email address from a provider such as Gmail or Yahoo, avoid using nicknames, slang terms, or numbers.Youll also want to establish yourself within your community by including local references and increasing your local networking efforts. Consider looking into Simply Hired discussion boards based on your physical location or joining a local Meet-Up group, BNI group or church-affiliated Jobs Assistance Program. For nationalWhen you take your application national, it may require a few tweaks. For example, instead of including your full mailing address, use that space to indicate that you are interested in relocating for this pos ition or that your relocation is in progress. Youll also want to address the relocation process in your cover letter, including how and why you are considering the move. When it comes to networking, skip the local groups in favor of virtual networking opportunities in the form of LinkedIn groups, popular blog forums or by starting and promoting your own blog within your industry. Not only could each new connection lead to a new job opportunity, but the more plugged in you are within your field, the more attractive you are as a candidate.Identifying Useful Online ToolsWhether or not your career lends itself to digital technologies, the most successful job hunt will take advantage of online tactics. For localLook to local job search engines that organize position descriptions by physical location. Both Craigslist and Simply Hired offer extended local job search listings that allow you to connect with potential employers within a given zip code. You can also use Simply Hireds company page s tool to learn more about companies that are hiring in your area. For nationalFor national job searches, your work is a little less specific. Search by position descriptions and job titles to find jobs that suit your work history. To save time, sign up for email alerts related to the positions you are seeking so the job search engine will notify you when new jobs are posted.Since you may not be as familiar with companies across the country as you are with those in your backyard, you can also use Simply Hired company pages to be introduced to new, recommended companies based on the local opportunities you identify.Using Data to Your AdvantageWhether or not you are right-brained, youll be surprised how valuable science can be when performing your local or national job search. Employment data can often provide valuable insights into making your job search less stressful and more successful. For localLocal searches might seem too simple for big data. But if you can make a connection betw een national hiring trends and your talents, you can position yourself to appear much more polished to a potential hiring manager. You can also use employment data to determine the optimal starting range for salary negotiations. The more prepared you are to discuss your salary needs, the more successful your negotiation will be. For nationalWhen youre performing a national job search, employment data plays a much more direct role in how and where you look for a job.The most important data can be found in relevant employment outlook reports that share significant statistics about your field, including how many positions are hired for this career each year, which states are hiring the most and each states average starting salary. Other important data include the relative cost of living of each location and whether or not employers within your field typically cover relocation costs.Ready to start your search? We hope weve given you a number of helpful suggestions that will make your search more efficient and less stressful. Good luck.

You can easily determine your boss behavioral and work patterns by following him or her on social networks. Optimize this piece of knowledge to increase efficiency in the office. You may also read your managers social media posts to comprehend his or her state of mind and act accordingly.2. You Receive Attention and Office Becomes More Likeable Doesnt the office seem like a friendlier place when you know the big people? People begin to treat you differently and you certainly feel more important as you have all the inside scoop. Even if the boss doesnt give you extra benefits for real, the fact that your boss interacts with you more gives you the feeling that you are cared about. The welcoming work environment and a happy state of mind promote more creativity and boost productivity. You may even begin to value your company more. Work wise, if you ever wish to work from home, your bosss presence on social networks and internetfhiges mobiltelefon apps can make it easier to send files, ask questions and receive instant replies.3. You Begin To Understand the Companys DecisionsWhen you begin to move around with your boss, you sometimes get to hear (or overhear) information that is not meant to be discussed at the executive level. It allows you to talk about anything under the sun. Smart employees use this to discuss their advancement in the organization or inqui re about job opportunities outside it. Some employees also exploit this bond to seek special favors, such as the extension of a deadline. Also, adding your boss to your network of friends will help you show that you have a life outside of work, so you can request for some time off to cultivate your work-life balance. The Disadvantages1. It Restricts Constructive CriticismA situation where the boss is your friend can sometimes lead to awkwardness or hurt your feelings when he or she criticizes any aspect of your performance. Irrespective of whether your mistake is serious or not, you keep looking up to your boss for support. If he or she doesnt bail you out, you may even end up accusing and resenting your superior for it. This can seriously hamper your growth as an individual as you become the victim of expectation mismatch in a professional setup. In the case of serious performance-related problems, you even andrang the risk of losing your job, along with the friendship.2. You Can be Accused of Being FavoredA manager who shows genuine concern for the welfare of his or her subordinates is often proud to have a happy and productive team of workers. But a manager who displays any signs of favoritism toward select employees at the expense of neglecting the others needs creates a toxic work environment for everyone. In such a scenario, being the root cause of this negativity in the team can bring resentment. You may end up feeling lousier when the accusations of being favored are due to you being friends with the boss, and not for doing better work. The loathing will continue to grow in case you receive promotion or a pay hike.3. You Cant Suddenly Draw a Line Between Personal and Professional LifeBeing in the bosss good books can help you professionally, but there are times when it can even boomerang. You always run the risk of over-sharing your personal life in the office. This may lead to unproductive drama that can affect your peace of mind and productivity. Also when your manager is added to your Facebook friend list, social media concerns take over. If you called in sick at work to take your wife out to that fancy new restaurant in town, you have too many things to worry about. If your do this, rememberDont check-inDont update your statusDont put up a pictureDont review the placeOver-thinking on these lines can take away half the fun of social sharing. Youre always concerned about your boss screening your profile and creating perceptions. Your freedom and privacy go for a toss. If youre the type of employee whose out-of-office personality differs from the workplace, then having your boss as a friend on social networks might not be the best idea. Different surveys by companies like SodaHead and Beyond.com have time and again showed that employees dont want to be friends with their bosses on Facebook.Image Source employmentmetrix.com4. Be Ready To Be TestedBosses who appoint their friends and relatives can always ask them to work till late or sacrifice their weekends. Despite being close to you, your boss wouldnt want the blame for giving too much leeway and not bringing out the best in you. He or she may even feel responsible for you at times and that he or she must prove the worth of his or her own actions to the company. For bosses, bringing family members and close friends on board can make it difficult for them to show their liberal side at work. You could be the first one to be affected by cuts in payroll during difficult times like recession or layoffs. So just be careful your closeness to your boss could bring you on top of the companys hit list.

In addition, these airmen are responsible for maintaining and operating cameras and other photography equipment and gear. Like all photographers, they’re skilled at processing film as well as using digital photography equipment.  Theres a separate Air Force job that deals with videography, which involves taking moving pictures rather than still photos, but the job duties may overlap in some instances. Part of their duties includes photographing medical procedures, which they coordinate with medical staff. This requires specialized training, which airmen in this job will receive during technical school. Here theyll learn the basics of taking photographs in combat situations and other scenarios, how to upload images and content to the Air Force websites, and to ensure their photos and other content meets Department of Defense and Air Force standards. Civilian Jobs Similar to Air Force Photojournalist These airmen are well-qualified for jobs with news organizations or communications firms that use photography as part of a storytelling process. The training youll receive will allow you to take photos in just about any situation, and many photojournalists work in side gigs such as wedding photography or portraiture.

Difference Between Law Enforcement and Policing

Difference Between Law Enforcement and Policing Difference Between Law Enforcement and Policing Often when we discuss criminal justice systems, strategies, and even professions, the terms law enforcement and policing are used interchangeably. Though to some the two concepts may seem to be the same or- at most- a difference without distinction, to criminology practitioners the terms have very big and very important differences. For those of you interested in pursuing careers in criminal justice or criminology, you should learn what the difference is between law enforcement and policing and why the distinction matters. Concept of Law Enforcement At its core, the concept of law enforcement consists of just that: enforcing laws. In its purest form, law enforcement requires an unwavering adherence to rules and procedures. It is a focus on the letter of the law rather than the spirit of the law. Citations are issued, arrests are made, and force is employed with little regard for the reason or meaning behind a particular law or policy. Law enforcement can be a very effective way to maintain public order and punish crime inasmuch as it is focused on requiring the members of a community or society to comply with the law or face the consequences. The problem of law enforcement alone as a response to crime is that it is singular in its approach, responding to effects without consideration for causes. Concept of Policing The term policing has come to mean an approach to crime fighting through community service and problem-solving. The idea of policing requires a holistic approach to community service, taking into account the problems that plague a community and working with the people within that community to solve them. Policing requires cooperation from residents, business owners, and leaders who participate in the process of reducing crime and improving quality of life. While this idea of community policing may sound revolutionary, it actually dates back to the earliest days of the modern police force. The concept is best articulated in Sir Robert Peels nine principles of policing. Difference Between Law Enforcement and Policing While there may be a temptation to believe the two concepts are one and the same, or even two sides of the same coin, in truth the difference goes deeper. Whereas law enforcement implies compulsory compliance, policing suggests voluntary adherence. In that sense, law enforcement is but one component of policing, one of many tools in the toolbox available to police officers and law enforcement agencies. Whys Does the Difference Matter? In the current environment, particularly in the United States, there is a perception that a gulf has emerged between police departments and their communities. By focusing solely on law enforcement, as opposed to the holistic approach to community policing, officers risk widening the gulf. Taking a law enforcement-only approach to fighting crime can encourage an us-against-them mentality, both in officers and the members of the public they serve. When police look to work within their communities to solve problems and fight crime together, it encourages participation and ownership for all parties and helps foster trust between officers and the general public.

Advice for Female Job Seekers Move Beyond the Asterisks

Advice for Female Job Seekers Move Beyond the ‘Asterisks’ Advice for Female Job Seekers Move Beyond the ‘Asterisks’ 2If you aspire to a leadership role, you need to learn some strategies and skills that can pave your way to the management track and, ultimately, the C-level. Yet when it comes to career advancement into top positions, women face some specific challenges that have been well-documented in research- and these challenges can extend to the job search. Gender Inequality and Double Standards For example, part of successful leadership is simply taking the steps needed to become successful in the first place. Yet as Marianne Cooper noted in Harvard Business Review, when a woman is perceived to be more successful, she is less liked. Cooper gives instances of this gender-based double standard, pointing out that unlike their male counterparts, female leaders are often “applauded for delivering results at work but then reprimanded for being ‘too aggressive,’ ‘out for herself,’ ‘difficult,’ and ‘abrasive.’” You can see how these themes might play out just as easily during the interview process as after you land the job. Another way that gender inequities are reflected at the leadership level hits the bottom line. A new study by Joseph Grenny and David Maxfield shows that when women act as leaders and are equally as assertive or forceful as their male coworkers, these women face severe penalties. Not only does their perceived competency take a nosedive (dropping by 35%), but their perceived worth also plummets over $15,000. In a job search, this kind of dynamic could conceivably affect the salary that you’re offered. Overcoming Inequality to Reach the C-Suite How can women overcome these emotional inequalities in the workplace and job market to take their rightful place alongside men in the boardroom and the C-suite? For starters, you can learn what not  to do, according to Krista Anderson-Copperman, chief customer officer at Okta. I spoke with Anderson-Copperman recently near Okta’s offices in San Francisco, where she shared her philosophy of “no asterisks.” She describes a no-asterisks approach as avoiding women’s tendency to feel that they must add or say something extra to be considered “worthy” professionally. Women can easily fall into asterisks mentality by adding too many caveats to their statements during the search process, whether in a phone screen, cover letter, interview, or networking event. These verbal hedges (whether spoken or in writing) can make you sound less qualified and capable than you really are. By avoiding tacking on these asterisks in the form of apologies, justifications, safety blankets, or polite interruptions, you can present yourself more powerfully and authentically to recruiters and hiring managers, increasing your chances to land the opportunity you want. Here is Anderson-Copperman’s advice for female job seekers to take a no-asterisks approach when looking for work or trying to land a leadership opportunity: Go ‘no holds barred.’ Confidence in the job search begins with which opportunities you go after, Anderson-Copperman emphasized.  Ã¢€œDon’t be afraid to apply just because you don’t meet every ‘requirement’ on the listing,” she said. “Know your worth, believe that you can succeed, and apply for the position- because establishing your drive is what will land you the job.” Next, she advised being prepared to take a no-asterisks approach to how you present yourself in the interview. “Refrain from sprinkling apologies into the interview if you don’t fulfill every item on their checklist, and erase ‘I feel’ and ‘I believe’ from your vocabulary to show confidence in how your skills can overcome or supersede any gaps,” said Anderson-Copperman. Pay attention to what you say, and how you say it. The CCO next shared that adopting a no-asterisks approach was part of what helped her advance to the C-level. She explained that developing self-awareness of her limiting habits and tendencies helped her modify her actions and choices to reflect stronger executive presence. As Anderson-Copperman made changes to zap “asterisks” language from her speech, she started to see that her colleagues listened and responded to her differently than before. “It wasn’t an immediate ‘aha!’ moment,” she said, “but one that built over time as the way people perceived me began to change little by little.” Ditch the disclaimers. If you present yourself authentically and confidently to potential employers and managers, you will command respect from them, advised Anderson-Copperman. “Confidence and authenticity establish credibility and inspire trust: trust in your ideas, your worthiness, and your ability to lead,” she said. “Act like you are deserving of every opportunity you desire, because you are. If you have faith in yourself, then those who surround you will develop faith in you as well.” Start Your Job Search

Accurately Track the Source of your Job Applies

Accurately Track the Source of your Job Applies Accurately Track the Source of your Job Applies Accurately Track the Source of your Job Applies How effective is your current recruitment strategy? Can you accurately track how job seekers are finding your job postings? Was it on a job site, a social network, in an online search, or was it? Without accurate candidate source data, your company may be wasting valuable recruitment advertising dollars using the wrong strategy. Many companies suffer from this data gap in tracking the source of applies. Yet the solution requires minimal effort, with no risk to your companys current recruitment strategy. The solution is to automate your candidate source tracking. Take the Guesswork out of Apply Sourcing Traditionally, applicants are asked to select from a long list of confusing and often incorrect sources during the apply process. The resulting sourcing data is often inaccurate. To address this issue, many ATSs have developed functionality that automatically adds source tracking tags to job apply links. These tags accurately track the candidate source and eliminate the need for a long drop-down menu. By automatically pre-filling the candidate source, applicants come away with a more efficient apply experience one that provides your organization with accurate source data. How Tracking Works Automated tracking is simple: during the posting process at your ATS, a unique tag is added to the end of the job apply link. This tag tracks the apply source that corresponds with each of the sites you are posting to. For example, here is a job URL without a tag: https://sample.url.net/careersection/00000/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en By adding a tag to the end of the job URL, the apply source can then be tracked: https://sample.url.net/careersection/00000/jobsearch.ftl?lang=ensrc=JB-11180 The tag is generated by your ATS system a common practice for large company ATS providers. While this option is easy to execute, its often overlooked during the ATS training process. Take the Next Step A growing number of ATSs, have added automated candidate source tracking to their off-the-shelf offerings, including those used by enterprise companies as well as smaller companies. You can determine if your current ATS supports tagging by speaking with your ATS contact, or by filing a service ticket with your ATS provider. Once the tagging is implemented, its best to test the functionality by submitting some sample applications from a few job postings or ads. After this process is in place, be sure to ask your ATS contact how to access your sourcing data reports. This information will help you more effectively allocate your future recruitment budget.

Transform Your Recruiting Process TodayFor Free

Transform Your Recruiting Process Today…For Free Transform Your Recruiting Process Today…For Free At SimplyHired we hear quite a few grievances from both sides of the hiring process aisle.  Prospective candidates often complain about cumbersome application processes or unresponsive companies.  Those looking to hire, on the other hand, feel the pains of a lack of quality talent or, per more modern trends, great candidates “ghosting” halfway through the interview process.   While there will always be outlyers in any recruitment program, there are a few common stress points that cause an otherwise smooth process to go awry in a hurry.  With our inside look at the stages of hiring and our reutation for making quality employment connections we recently took the opportunity of an unhappy applicant to conduct a real life case study on what irks potential candidates.  Keep reading for our take on what it takes to transform your recruiting process today, for free. Our Unhappy Subject We sat down with a highly qualified professional who has recently been searching for a new position via Simply Hired and independent listings.  The job seeker was recently laid off due to corporate downsizing and has an impressive resume in their field. In our initial feedback session, they pointed to the lengthy online application process and their number one frustration when applying for individual positions.   While it’s useful to gather information about prospective candidates, most of what you need to know will be included in a professional resume or cv.  Education, experience, relevant certifications, and contact details are all crticial elements of candidate consideration and should all be available at a glance for any recrutier or hiring manager.  If you must have a resume fed into your standard format, plenty of application programs will allow an applicant to upload their resume and pull designated fields with little to no fuss. An ideal application should steer away from questions requiring paragraph long answers or that take longer than 10 minutes or so to complete.  The only thing a lengthy and confusing application process will do is scare off the most qualified of individuals who have plenty of prospects in today’s competitive job market. In addition to the time and complexity of submitting a resume, the candidate also highlighted poor mobile application experience as a turn off when attempting to apply for open positions.  Today’s job-seeker is increasingly on the go and mobile dependent for everything from shopping to social media to applying for jobs. We’ve delved into this topic plenty in the past, but it’s good to highlight that a lack of mobile friendliness today is a surefire way to get candidates to click the back button. Last but not least on our candidate’s list of gripes involved communication by potential employers.  For those positions they did choose to apply for, in many cases, there was no confirmation of receipt of resume or application, nor any follow up on whether a resume was rejected as not the right fit.  In one particularly egregious case, the candidate participated in an initial screening interview and was told they were approved to move on to an in person opportunity. After several weeks of no response or follow up to his email inquiries, the candidate gave up.  When the company did manage to get back to the candidate, let’s just say impressions were less than rosey. While this may seem to be a bit of doom and gloom, every cloud always has a silver lining.  If you’re reading this article, we’ve just laid out three real life, simple, and freely executable solutions to help improve your hiring process: keep the application process simple, ensure mobile accessibility and don’t forget to stay on top of your communication.  Our case study may not match the experiences of every recruit, but it’s certainly a solid starting spot for an easy, simple, and free overhaul of your recruiting process. Check back in as we continue to delve into best practices for recruiters, hiring professionals, and employees to help further our mission of making quality connections between job-seekers and companies in need of talent.

10 Advertising Phrases That Are Actually Meaningless

10 Advertising Phrases That Are Actually Meaningless 10 Advertising Phrases That Are Actually Meaningless There is an art to writing copy and creating advertisements. There is also a science. The two, when combined, can create selling messages that are very effective. But when you really drill down into some of the carefully crafted language, you’ll discover that advertisers are saying a whole lot but delivering little-to-no substance. This is the job of less reputable  copywriters and their advertising agencies. They are tasked with turning everything the client provides into the most convincing argument that will make a sale. Now, to be fair, the better the info from the client, the less the agency will need to spin it. But at the end of the day, a good ad agency wont resort to this kind of nonsense. These phrases are misleading, and here are 10 of the biggest offenders. Scientifically Formulated. You’ll hear this phrase used in ads for diet pills, beauty creams, and even pet foods. It’s a phrase specifically written to sound impressive, yet means nothing. What the companies using this phrase hope you get from it is that it is scientifically proven. But that is a completely different ballgame. If they pull that phrase out, they have to back it up with all sorts of statistics and test results. Chances are, they can’t, or they’d use it. So, they rely on the phrase that sounds very similar, but in fact, is empty verbiage. All it means is that this product was put together using some kind of “scientific” method. That could be as simple as mixing a few ingredients or devised by someone who can prove he or she is a scientist of some description. Basically… we made this product using chemicals and ingredients that we mixed together. Well, isn’t that a whole lot of nothing? When They’re Gone, They’re Gone. Sometimes, very rarely, this will actually mean what it says. You may be at a market stall and the owner had only five cuts of meat left. When they’re gone, they’re gone. End of story. Most of the time, however, you’ll hear this phrase in infomercials, on radio ads, and on late-night TV spots. The phrase is considered a “motivator” or “call to action.” It adds urgency and makes people pick up the phone or log on. But the chances of the product actually being gone are close to zero. In fact, it’s wishful thinking. It’s a scam. And if they ever are “gone,” they’ll order more. You may have to wait a little while but you’ll get it. Product manufacturers will always do their utmost to meet the demand with supply. If you want it, you’ll get it. Helps to… …fight fat. Helps to soften hair. Helps to reduce acne. Helps to strengthen nails. And so on. What does “helps” actually mean though? And how much does it help? If you see someone has stalled their car, and need a push, you can help by throwing all your weight into it. Or, you can push the car with your little finger. Both are helping, but one is not actually doing much to change the situation. The idea that a product helps to do anything is meaningless without saying just how much it helps, and how it does it. The next time any product or service claims to help you with anything, take it with a huge grain of salt. It may not hurt the situation, but there’s no guarantee the money you’re spending is worth the result. No [Product/Service] Is Better! Think about that phrase carefully for a second. You can also swap out the adjective to one of your choosing - faster, smoother, thicker, greater, bigger, smaller, and so on. At first, you are under the impression that the product or service being advertised is the best in its class. However, that’s not what the phrase is saying. What it really means is that this particular product or service is no worse than what else is on offer. For instance, any number of detergents could claim “no soap cleans better,” but it doesn’t mean it’s the best. It just means it’s as good as the others. Tricky language for sure, but completely pointless. Also, the same applies to the phrase “unsurpassed.” Up to [XX Percent] Off! Talk about misleading. Any time you see a headline or sale sign that makes this claim, think about what it actually means. If someone told you they would pay you up to $10 to walk their dog, would you expect $10? They are within their rights to give you a single, solitary $1 bill for the service. It is accurate. $1 is up to $10. When stores use this, they will probably have one or two items that are at that threshold; they say up to 75 percent off, and in the back of the store, on a dusty shelf, is one old DVD set marked down by 75 percent. The rest of the store is “up to 75 percent off,” which can be as little as just 1 percent off the original price. Commonly, you’ll see most of the sale items are between 10-25 percent off. Very few will hit the magic number, even when a store is under liquidation. You are being given the best possible scenario for saving money, but you may only get that much off one or two products, if you’re lucky. Part of a… …complete breakfast. Part of a balanced diet. Part of a healthy routine. Well, let’s analyze that for a moment. Nitrogen is part of the air we breathe, and so is carbon dioxide and methane. But we want the 21 percent of the air that is made from oxygen. Death is part of life. Urination is part of your daily routine. In almost everything, there are both good and bad parts. So saying anything is “part of” something isn’t saying all that much. And even if it is good, how much of it is needed to become significant? Can you eat a whole bowl of Frosted Flakes for breakfast and get the nutrition you need, or is it only part of it? How much? Without specifics, it’s all just waffle. Designed to [Insert Claim Here]. Let’s imagine that you’re watching a TV ad for a new type of bleach, and the ad said “XYZ bleach is designed to remove every single stain in your bathroom without you lifting a finger.” Well, that’s great! But just because something is designed to do something, it doesn’t always follow that it will actually do it. You could create a fruit smoothie that’s designed to increase your energy levels by 50 percent. If it only raises them 2 percent, it has failed… but the intention still stands. So be very wary of anything claiming it was designed to do something, or formulated to produce a certain outcome. Unless it can back it up with legitimate testing and research, it’s just a hollow phrase. (By the way, this article is designed to inform and entertain you. Hopefully, it does… but there’s no guarantee.) Made With 100 Percent [Product]. Here’s another claim that says nothing and yet implies so much. You will see it on all kinds of products. Made with 100 percent pure cranberry juice. Made with 100 percent Brazilian coffee beans. Made with 100 percent cotton. Here’s the thing. The claim does not say that the product is actually comprised of 100 percent of anything. It is simply stating that part of it used something pure. Think about it. Cranberry cocktail that’s primarily apple juice is still made with 100 percent pure cranberry juice; it only makes up about 10 percent of the contents, but it was a pure ingredient when it went in. The fact that they used a pure ingredient is meaningless without the other part of the equation - namely, how much of that ingredient is in the final product. Only then is it informative. This Product Could… …save you 15 percent or more on your car insurance. This product could help you lose weight (as part of a calorie-controlled diet with plenty of exercise). This product could make you look 20 years younger. Could is not will. It merely indicates the possibility that something may or may not happen. President Trump could resign tomorrow; it’s not likely, but it’s possible. Intelligent life could be found on other planets next week. Again, the chances are against it, but is it possible? Of course. So, when a slogan uses “could” you have to remind yourself that the promise is worthless. Yeah, it could help you lose weight, but it could also make you gain weight. It could make you look younger, but then again, it could make you break out in an awful rash. Could have no place in a brand statement. It’s fluff. Risk-Free Another popular phrase from the world of infomercials and hard-sell direct marketing TV spots is the old “risk-free” gem. “Call now for a risk-free trial!” “It’s risk-free. What have you got to lose?!” Well, let’s think about this for a moment. Risk-free literally means “free from danger or risk of harm; a safe place.” How does this apply to order a new kitchen gadget from a TV spot? It’s some tricky wording that makes a lot of people believe the offer itself is free. That, of course, is not true. There will be a way for you to get your money back, but it may not include all that you originally paid out. And, it’s possible you could be stuck on the phone for hours, or have to jump through a multitude of hoops to get a resolution you’re happy with. Does the whole “risk-free” verbiage cover that process? Who’s to say, really? Was your life in physical danger? Did you at any time come to any harm? Did you finally get your money back? It’s a phrase that promises a lot but delivers very little substance. And should you think that risk-free guarantees you the outcome you want, think again. It’s not a legal term, and you’ll have a hard time fighting the company in court, should it ever come to that.   Watch out for phrases like these, and keep an open mind whenever you are viewing or listening to ads of any kind. What at first sounds impressive may actually be a big nothing burger.
